what a year this has been for the Capitol City. A typical year would have the St. Pats Parade, Fourth of July celebrations, State Fair, Christmas parade among others. The one thing none of us saw coming was the death of Mayor Tim Davlin. A great and wonderful man in every sense of the word. I met Tim back in 2003 when he was running for mayor the first time around and interviewed him back in my days as News Director of WQNA and was impressed by him as all that met him. Even though he was considered a longshot up against the likes of Tony Libri, Don Hickman and the others, but he pulled off the upset by defeating Libri in the 2003 General Election and won re-election in 2007 over Bruce Strom. The mayor and I did a C-Note view or two here on 997 KISS-FM and those were fun indeed and he seemed to enjoy them as well. At any social event, Tim was able to light up the room which made the event more special. The last time I spoke to Tim was after he wrapped up an appearance on AM Springfield on Sportsradio 1450 and I mentioned to him about the possibility of succeding Jesse White as Secretary of State, but did not commit one way or another. At the time I did not know that would be the last conversation I would ever have with Tim. When the news broke that day, I feared the worst. At the city hall news conference, Police Chief Robert Williams broke the news to the community but my feeling I had was correct unfortunately. The community turned out to pay their last respects and I say he'll be missed whether at city hall or in the community-at-large. 2011 won't be the same but we must press on to be a better Springfield just like he had wanted it. Hopefully one day, Municipal Center can be be renamed in his honor as a lasting tribute to his legacy. Not sure if it will ever happen but just a thought.
